A lesson in self-help

I was having a coffee with a close friend the other day.

They’d been suffering from some anxiety, and had gone on youtube and found a guided meditation designed to relieve anxiety.

“The problem was,” they said, “however hard I tried, I just couldn’t picture my anxious thoughts as drops of water passing before me and falling into an infinitely still pool.”

Then with a smile, “The harder I tried, the more I starting thinking, ‘why can’t I do this?’ And my anxiety got even worse!”

If your help isn’t helping you, the problem isn’t you: it’s the help.

So find what or who works for you and don’t be concerned with what doesn’t work for you.

Keep asking the essential question: is this making me stronger?
